2019 Special Needs Community Easter Egg Hunt

Dave Farris BE THE CHURCH, Community, News

We are inviting you to join us at our 2019 Special Needs Community Easter Egg Hunt at Thornspring Pastures on Saturday, April 20. While aligning with other community egg hunts that day, this hunt will be specifically designed with our special needs children in mind. A Facebook event (LINK HERE) has been set up for you to learn more or share with others who may be interested in volunteering, contributing or participating.

If you don’t know someone with special needs, we still invite you to be a part of the event through one of three avenues:

  1. You can volunteer your time
    • We have set up a short volunteer interest form (HERE) for those willing to serve.
    • We are seeking volunteers to help not only on the day of the event but also to help prepare for the day (ie stuffing eggs, set up the field, constructing a makeshift wheelchair accessible path, etc)
  2. You can volunteer materials
    • We have set up a detailed Amazon wish list for your convenience (HERE)
    • We are hoping to provide a total of at least 2,000 eggs (specifically color coated and specifically filled with candy & toys to match various special needs)
  3. You can volunteer financial support
    • We have sent out a letter to local businesses asking for their participation in the event through needed materials or financial support, and welcome you to join in that effort.

You can drop off your donations at the Northstar Pulaski Church office located at 233 Broad St. Dublin, VA 24084.  (Please contact them at SpecialNeeds@NorthstarPulaski.org or at 540-307-0407 to set up a time to do so)

If you do know someone with special needs, we welcome you and your family to join us for the egg hunt itself:

  • Thornspring Pastures Farmfest will open at noon
  • Registration for the Special Needs Egg Hunt will open at 1 pm (look for the canopy tent)
  • We will begin once the other community helicopter drops have been completed (approximately 2:30pm)
  • We encourage you to pre-register the participants with us if possible to help us ensure we have enough volunteers prepared to assist you and yours.
    • To pre-register, please fill out our online registration form (HERE)
  • On site registrations will be open until 2:15pm (or until we have reached capacity)

Customized Field & Eggs:

  • The field will be divided into quadrants with specifically colored eggs in each quadrant
  • We not only want accommodate the field to our special needs community, we also want to accommodate the eggs
  • Eggs will be color coded and filled with unique candy and/or prizes to fit various special needs:
    • Blue eggs will be filled with candy that is allergen-free.
      • The top 8 most common allergens were targeted (milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat & soy).
    • Purple eggs will be filled with sugar free candy with diabetic individuals in mind.
    • Yellow eggs will be filled with soft candy.
    • Orange eggs will be filled with small toys.
  • Families are encouraged to select the most appropriate section with the specific individual in mind when registering

With this event we hope to establish an ongoing relationship with the special needs community in the NRV. We hope to provide appropriate supports and an engaging experience with their needs in mind. We also want to thank those assisting us with this labor of love. Your contributions will help us show love to a valued group of people in our community.

A special shout out to our friends at Thornspring Pastures for sharing our heart toward the Special Needs Community!  Thank you Mike and Tina for your incredible generosity!
