Dave Farris

After serving as a middle/high school youth pastor for 12 years & attending seminary in Cincinnati, Dave and his family returned back to his home state of Virginia.

He was brought on at Northstar Church in Blacksburg to serve in a variety of staff roles as the church went through several growth spurts. Eventually, the call that drove the Farris family back to Virginia in the first place became undeniably clear.

It really just got to the point where we (Mandy and I) could not avoid this step of faith any longer.

Dave, his wife Mandy, and their 3 children (Jeremiah, Thomas, & Caroline) started praying through what a new church would look like in a rural county that already had over 100 churches in existence.

Northstar Church Pulaski began meeting weekly on Sunday September 11, 2013!

Mandy, also a Pulaski native, currently works at the Carilion Clinic in Blacksburg as a registered nurse. She and Dave were married in 2002. Jeremiah (12) loves to play basketball and disc golf as well as watch any show involving Bear Grylls. Thomas (8) is a Lego Master as well as being an avid soccer player. Both boys adore their baby sister Caroline (3), who can already hold her own against her big brothers. The entire family loves to camp and spend time in the outdoors!

Dave is the Campus Pastor on the staff at Northstar. Visit our leadership page to get to know the rest of the team.

MORE…WORSHIP AT THE LAKE

News, Worship

Worship at the Lake has become a favorite tradition during the month of July. This year we have decided to stretch that tradition out for another month. Due to the success and stories we have heard this past month, not to mention a lack of air conditioning in the YMCA gym, we will be worshiping at the lake through August. …

BE THE CHURCH, Missional, News, Worship

For the past 5 years, we have had the opportunity to hold our Sunday worship gatherings at the Claytor Lake State Park, and it has been awesome for a few reasons.  It gives most of our volunteers a month off during the summer, keeps us mobilized and on mission, and it has provided us an opportunity to build relationships with …

Passion Week Devotion 4.16.19

Uncategorized

Questions are powerful. Devotion by our Blacksburg Associate Pastor Neal Nelson Questions reveal the intentions of our hearts like a seasoned detective obtaining a confession of a crime without the criminal even realizing it. And Jesus was a master detective of the human heart as revealed in the events of Tuesday during Passion Week. Jesus’ time in the temple on …

Family Worship Gatherings

Life Together, News, Worship

When we gather corporately each Sunday morning to be reminded of and celebrate who we are in Christ, it is important to us that our kids are hearing the same message of hope and love.  Generally, they hear it with their peers in designated Kid’s Ministry class settings. Beginning in 2019, however, every 5th Sunday we will gather corporately as …

2019 Community Good Friday Worship

BE THE CHURCH, Community, News

Good Friday is only good because of the reality we celebrate on Sunday.  If Jesus did not walk out of the tomb, conquering death, we would not have a reason to gather on Friday….but He did! And so we gather on Good Friday: We gather to reflectively worship the greatest act of love ever committed We gather to remember the …

Habakkuk: A Northstar Sermon Series

Sermon Series

Depending on how well you know the Books of the Bible, you may or may not know about the prophet Habakkuk.  He was given three short chapters tucked in toward the end of the Old Testament, and yet there is so much to glean from those few pages about our mighty God. There are times we question God… “Why are …

Saturday Seminary: Creation Apologetics

News, Saturday Seminary

— Have you ever been told that “science” and “the Bible” are incompatible? — Did you know that there is proof that the creation account written in Genesis is in fact how everything came to be?   As a believer in Jesus Christ, we are instructed to defend our faith (1 Peter 3:15). However, many of us feel inadequate, unsure …
