“If you want to see God, read your Bible.” – John Piper
All personal spiritual disciplines, including reading the Word of God, rely on being “doers of the Word and not hearers only” (JAMES 1:22). If you would consider yourself a believer in Jesus Christ, there really is no way to deny the importance of reading God’s Word on a consistent basis. One simply cannot be doers of the Word or be disciple-making disciples without a solid foundation in the Bible. It is through his Word that we can truly see God.
In the coming year, you are invited to join us in practicing the discipline of daily Bible reading as part of “2020 Vision: A Journey Through God’s Word.” There are six options this year. Five of those options provide a calendar of daily readings that culminate in completion of the entire Bible in a single year. The sixth option is a calendar of daily readings that allow you to read through the Bible over two years. No matter where you are spiritually, there is an option for you:
Option 1 – Genesis to Revelation
This option is the most straight-forward way to read any book – from the beginning to the end. If you have never read through the Bible before, this might be the best way to start. But anyone can use it.
Option 2 – Chronological Reading
This option might pose a refreshing perspective to those who normally read from beginning to end or to those who like history and/or think sequentially. This calendar provides reading selections in the chronological order of the writings and events.
Option 3 – The RMM Method
Created by Scottish minister Robert Murray M’Cheyne, this method provides a new level of challenge to the regular reading AND is appropriate for the new reader as well. The RMM Method takes you through the entire Bible during the year and allows you to read the New Testament and Psalms twice. In addition, the readings are structured to help you appreciate the connectedness of the scriptures.
Option 4 – YouVersion/Let’s Read the Bible Together
This option will probably appeal to the technologically savvy. YouVersion is a free Bible app containing its own set of reading plans. We will utilize one of the plans and take advantage of the built-in features for discussion with others plan followers.
Choose the Let’s Read the Bible Together Plan or ask Nikki Lockhart (email@example.com) to add you to the group.
Option 5 — YouVersion/The Bible Project
Much like the option above, this version utilizes the YouVersion Bible app. It differs in that his version provides video insights for the daily readings. Download the app (see the link above) and search for the Bible Project reading plan or ask Amy Hall (firstname.lastname@example.org) to add you to the group.
Option 6 — Read the Bible Over the Next Two Years
Anyone who would like a disciplined reading plan but wants to reserve some devotional time for prayer and reflection will enjoy this plan. Sponsored by The Gospel Coalition, this plan takes two years to complete the RMM plan (described above).
Donuts & Devos
Donuts & Devos will be from 9-10:30 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month, when we gather at the church office for fellowship (coffee & donuts of course), along with conversations about our daily Bible readings.
Whether you are able to keep up on a daily basis or not, we want to invite you to come be a part of the monthly discussion as we hope to further process God’s Word through discussion and conversation with each other.
If we are going to live the mission of being disciples who make disciples, our lives must be filled daily with the life-giving words of Almighty God. If you are on Facebook, here is a link to the monthly events: https://www.facebook.com/events/2196163060632092/
